What is standardization?

Standardization means creating agreed ways of doing something. The purpose of standards is to simplify the work of authorities, facilitate trade, and to make consumers' everyday lives easier.

Standardization increases product compatibility and safety, protects the consumer and the environment, and facilitates both domestic and international trade.

Standards are published as documents anyone can purchase and use. While standards may be used and applied at no extra cost, standards documents are subject to a charge. This is how the majority of the work conducted by SFS and its standards writing bodies is funded.
